In latest Uttarakhand news, with the vector-borne dengue spreading its tentacles thick and fast across Uttarakhand, particularly in Rishikesh, the nodal officer of the AIIMS’s social outreach cell Dr Santosh Kumar said that intense drive against dengue outbreak would be launched in Rishikesh to control the spread of the disease under the seven plus one model. Notably, an important meeting was held between the Rishikesh municipality and social outreach cell of AIIMS presided over by Rishikesh municipal commissioner Rahul Goyal.  Dr Santosh Kumar said that the drive would be launched mainly in the worst- affected areas of the town based on the last year’s figures. With this objective in view, a multi-disciplinary team would be formed comprising ASHA, ANM workers, regional councilors, people’s representatives and social workers aside from those working in Rishikesh municipality and health department. It is further learnt that the team would first focus on the most affected areas based on the last year’s figures for a week and would remove accumulated water, the breeding points of dengue-begetting mosquitoes.  Thereafter, the team members would be engaged in clearing the accumulated water in their own houses taking one hour every week. Dr Kumar further said that to eliminate the disease, the active participation of the residents of each ward and the slum dwellers is an imperative.

Speaking at the meeting, the district malaria officer Dr Subhash Josi said that more effective means of curbing this disease is ensure that water is not accumulated anywhere rather than the conventional means of   fogging and using insecticides.
