Special parliament session commences with PM’s speech

The long-awaited five-day special session of the Parliament started with the Prime Minister Narendra Modi paying glowing tributes to the old Parliament building during his hour-long address in the Lok Sabha. He said that the old, heritage building would be dedicated to over 7,500 parliamentarians who participated in sessions since Independence and respectfully recalled the vision of the first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and subsequent leaders, including Lal Bahadur Shastri, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Chandrashekhar, P V Narasimha Rao, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and Lal Krishna Advani.
In his speech in the Rajya Sabha, Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru had always pitched for a robust Opposition. Taking a swipe at the PM, he said that now the government was focused on weakening the Opposition by unleashing ED, CBI and the like on the Opposition leaders. He urged the Centre to change its autocratic style of functioning. Otherwise, shifting to a new Parliament would serve no purpose, he warned
