The large number of tourists visiting Nainital to seek relief from the heat still being experienced in various plain regions has exacerbated the drinking water shortage in this hill station. According to sources, the visiting tourists are consuming more than 33 per cent of the total drinking water being supplied daily to Nainital city. The Jal Sansthan executive engineer Vipin Kumar Chauhan informed that the demand for drinking water has nearly doubled due to the large number of tourists visiting Nainital. He said that in general, about seven to eight MLD water is supplied daily for the 40,000 local population and hotels in Nainital. However, with the rise in the number of tourists, the department is supplying about 12 MLD of water daily. Out of this quantity, about four MLD water is being supplied to the hotels. On normal days, seven to eight MLD of water is adequate for Nainital but the supply has had to be increased to 12 MLD for about one month now, he added. The increased tourist load resulting in increased consumption of water is also causing issues in some of the localities where the supply of drinking water has been affected.
