Portion of bridge being constructed on NH-58 collapses

Two labourers died on the spot while eight were injured when the shuttering of a bridge under construction near Narkota in Rudraprayag district on the national highway to Badrinath collapsed on Wednesday morning.  The district administration has ordered a probe into the incident.

The shuttering of the bridge being constructed as part of the all-weather road project at Narkota on the Rishikesh-Badrinath national highway 58 collapsed at about 9 AM on Wednesday. Ten labourers were crushed by the collapsed part of the structure. The State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and police reached the site and conducted a joint operation to rescue the labourers. Metal cutters were used to cut through the metal rods used in the shuttering in order to reach the trapped labourers. While two of the workers had died on the spot, the remaining eight injured labourers were taken to the district hospital for treatment.  Out of the injured workers, two had sustained serious injuries. After primary treatment, they were referred to the base hospital in Srinagar from where they were later referred to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh while the six other injured workers were being treated at the district hospital in Koteshwar. The district magistrate and other officials also reached the site of the mishap where they inquired into the details of the collapse. The sub divisional magistrate said that orders have been issued to probe the incident.
