Uttarakhand director general of police Ashok Kumar has said that the police in all districts of the State are alert following the murders of gangster turned politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed in the neighbouring State of Uttar Pradesh. Both were killed on Saturday night by three men posing as journalists when the duo was being brought for a medical examination at Prayagraj.
Kumar said that he had talked to inspector generals of Kumaon and Garhwal ranges about maintaining law and order in all districts late on Saturday night immediately after the news of the killings. He said that Uttarakhand usually remains peaceful even in such conditions but the police have been ordered to stay alert, especially in the areas which are considered sensitive in some districts.
The DGP further appealed to people and all sections of society to not get involved in any illegal activity which may disturb the law, peace and order in Uttarakhand due to something that has taken place in the neighbouring State and is not related to the people here. He said that all senior superintendents of police have been directed to interact with all sections of society to ensure that law and order is maintained in all districts. Meanwhile, the police are also conducting checks of vehicles entering the State, especially those from neighbouring Uttar Pradesh.
