The Urban Development minister Prem Chand Agarwal has said that the election for Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) in the State will be held soon. Interacting with the media persons on the sidelines of the 10th World Ayurved Congress at Parade Ground here on Thursday, the minister said that after the passage of the ordinance on Other Backward Classes (OBC) reservation in the ULBs, the department has started the process of the elections. He said that after deciding the reservations in all the ULBs of the State the department will seek objections from the public on the issue.
After the settlement of the objections, the State Election Commission (SEC) will start the process of conducting the elections of ULBs in the State in consultation with the State administration. It is likely that the entire process of deciding the reservations in ULBs and seeking public objections will take a time period of 10 to 15 days. In such a situation it is believed that the SEC will issue the notification of the ULB election in the last week of December and the elections are likely to be held in the month of January next year.
The five-year long tenure of the ULBs in the State had ended in December 2023 after which administrators were appointed in the ULBs. It is interesting to note that the State government had assured the Uttarakhand High Court that the process of elections of the ULBs in Uttarakhand will be completed before December 25, 2024.
There are 102 ULBs in the State and the elections for 99 ULBs (barring Kedarnath, Badrinath and Gangotri Nagar Panchayats) is to be be held.
