The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) department will soon hold a meeting to draft a proposal for introducing women’s policy in Uttarakhand to empower women and eliminate all forms of discrimination against them. The WECD minister Rekha Arya said that the government recently introduced a bill in the Vidhan Sabha to provide 30 per cent horizontal reservation to the women of Uttarakhand domicile in State government jobs.
In line with the same initiative, the Uttarakhand State Women’s Commission (USWC) is working on drafting a proposal for women’s policy for their socio-economic development, empowerment, and equal opportunities and to give attention to their needs as per their requirements. Besides the overall development of women, their safety, elimination of discrimination and progress in personal and professional life will also be included and prioritised in the proposed policy, said Arya. She said that the department will soon conduct a meeting in which several points will be discussed and analysed thoroughly in the presence of dignitaries concerned regarding the requirements of the State’s women belonging to different regions. “We aim to cover every issue in the policy regarding the welfare of women whether it’s their basic rights, safety, discrimination, pay parity, health, employment or anything else. The women’s commission will make its final draft after the proposed meeting which would be presented in the cabinet meeting,” said the WECD minister.
Further, Arya also talked about the removal of 100 outsourced employees who were working in the Take Home Ration (THR) scheme under the Supplementary Nutrition Programme (SNP) of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS). She said that the Central government had directed the State to run the THR scheme under the umbrella schemes introduced by the ministry of women and child development. “Most of the states have started working as per the scheme except us. We have even received a warning letter from the ministry recently as per which if we do not comply, we will not be given funds to carry out THR in the State. All the outsourced employees know it is the Central government’s policy. When we start working as per the Centre’s programme, we will recruit back the efficient employees,” said Arya.
