The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Uttarakhand Assembly, Yashpal Arya has said that the Modi government should release a white paper on the income of the farmers.
Arya said that while addressing an election rally on February 28, 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had declared that the income of the farmers would be doubled till the year 2022 when India would celebrate 75 years of its independence. He said that the promise of the PM on doubling the income of farmers has also proved to be airy-fairy like his other promises. Arya said that the reality is that more than 70 farmers are committing suicide in the country every month due to failure of monsoon, drought, increasing prices, excessive burden of the loans and disasters.
In the last eight years the seed, fertiliser, insecticide and diesel prices have doubled and the income of the farmers has not increased in the proportion of the expenses incurred by them. Arya said that the situation is so grim that the farmers are not able to receive the cost they incur in farming. The LoP said that animals such as wild boars, monkeys and the Nilgai are damaging crops in Uttarakhand and in the mountainous areas the farmers have almost left agriculture. Ayra said that the time limit given by the PM for doubling the income of farmers would end in ten days and the time has arrived when the government should tell the truth on the income of the farmers.
