The leader of opposition in the State Assembly Yashpal Arya has said that the State government is dithering on its promise of bringing a strict land law in Uttarakhand. He said that the Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the run up to the Assembly elections in the State had said that both water and youth of the hills would now be useful for the hilly areas. Arya said that the State government had promised that it would bring a new strong land law which would benefit the local people. The government promised that the land would be demarked into irrigated and non irrigated categories which would help the farmers. Arya said that a committee was formed and it had submitted its report to the government in September 2022 but the government has failed to bring in a strong land law.

The LoP said that the agitation for creation of  a new State of Uttarakhand was for the land, forest and water. The water sources are getting dried up and the forests are reducing and agricultural land is openly being given for non agriculture purposes.

He said that the powerful and resourceful people coming from other States are blatantly purchasing the land in the State in absence of any mechanism and the small and marginal farmers are becoming landless. Arya said that the land mafia and brokers are ruling the roost in absence of a strong land law.
