10 digital speed sign boards installed in four districts

Considering the increasing accident cases due to overspeeding across the State, the traffic directorate has installed 10 hi-tech speed limit sign-boards in the four vulnerable districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital. This is the first time such boards have been installed in the State.

The directorate has installed 10 boards in the initial phase as a safety measure as it prompts drivers to maintain their vehicle speed within the prescribed speed limit and displays a safe speed warning, the director of the Traffic Directorate Mukhtar Mohsin said. He said that the hi-tech speed limit sign board also known as radar speed sign board or digital speed sign board is installed on the road so that drivers can get information about the speed of their vehicle.

This sign uses radar technology to measure the speed of oncoming vehicles. He said, “When a vehicle passes near this sign board, its speed is displayed on the sign board. For example, if the speed limit is set at 20 kmph then it will blink amber light till 20. If the speed of a driver is above 20 kmph then it will blink red light. It also serves as a safety measure as it prompts drivers to maintain their vehicle speed within the prescribed speed limit and displays a safe speed warning,”

Mohsin said. He said that there will be psychological pressure on the drivers after noticing the speed limit of their vehicle on the digital speed sign board due to which they will possibly reduce the speed of their vehicle themselves if they were overspeeding. “If children sitting in a vehicle see these boards, they will tell their parents or guardian about the speed. It will also motivate them to follow the speed limit and traffic rules in their adult life,” the Traffic director added.
