A 100-bed dengue ward will be established at the Gandhi Shatabdi hospital along with a blood bank. The Health secretary R Rajesh Kumar instructed officials concerned to set up the dengue ward at the hospital in 24 hours after conducting inspection of the hospital, the district (Coronation) hospital and the control room on Sunday. This comes at a time when five new cases of dengue on Sunday increased the number of active cases in Dehradun to 40.
Kumar along with department officials visited the Coronation-Gandhi district hospital where he expressed dissatisfaction at the emergency arrangements. Inspecting the Gandhi hospital, he found that a dengue ward with about 100 beds can be set up there and directed officials to set up the facility in 24 hours. He also directed that the blood storage centre at the hospital should be converted to a full-time blood bank to prevent shortage of blood for patients. He also pulled up the officials on finding the central pathology facility closed and directed them to ensure that it is opened daily systematically. He directed that blood sample reports of patients should be taken till 8 PM. He also interacted with the patients and their caretakers while directing the officials to resolve the complaints received from the patients.
The Health secretary and his team also visited the dengue control room at ITDA. He said that coordination between the dengue control room and 104 service will be established so that information from all the districts can be exchanged. The daily figure of dengue patients in the State will be released after this on a daily basis. He said that the government is working on strengthening the information system and ensuring that those in need receive treatment on time. Kumar also directed officials of the municipal corporation to make fogging more effective than in the past. Fogging should be done repeatedly in notified areas and public awareness campaigns should be conducted consistently to ensure that the mosquito larvae are not breeding in houses. The Health secretary further said that government and private hospitals are being inspected by the authorities. Action is being taken on the complaints received by the government. Strict action will be taken against the hospitals not providing treatment to dengue patients under the Ayushman scheme, he added.
Appealing to the public for voluntarily donating blood, Kumar said that doctors recommend hospitalisation if a dengue patient’s platelet count falls below 50,000. The demand for platelets has increased considerably in most hospitals but the availability is limited. Voluntary blood donation is important to meet this demand so that the lives of the seriously ill patients can be saved.
Kumar was accompanied by the Health director general Dr Vinita Shah, Dehradun chief medical officer Dr Sanjay Jain, Health Directorate assistant director Dr Mayank Badola and the municipal health officer Dr Avinash Khanna among others.
