12 per cent voters exercise their franchise for ULB polls till 10 AM

In latest news from Uttarakhand, polling for the civic body elections being held across the State commenced at 8 AM for 100 civic bodies. As the polling started, people were found standing up in queues outside the booths. The voters’ enthusiasm was observed in nearly all the booths in several districts, including Dehradun, Tehri, Haridwar and Rudraprayag. By 10 am, nearly 12 per cent of the voters had cast their ballots. In Dehradun Municipal Corporation, the voting percentage was 9.23 while it was 11.28 per cent in Rishikesh, 9.67 per cent in Tehri and12.51 per cent in Srinagar. The voter turnout was 10.10 per cent in Doiwala Municipality by 10 AM.
Amidst tight security, the polling has been going on peacefully, said the State Election Commission officials, adding that they have aimed to further increase the turnout, taking it between 70 to 75 per cent.
Notably, elections are being held for the first time in Srinagar, Almora and Pithoragarh municipal corporations which were earlier municipalities.
