13 missing as cliff collapses on shops in Gaurikund

In latest Uttarakhand news, with rain-related woes continuing to haunt Uttarakhand, at least 13 people were feared buried under the debris as a cliff collapsed in the wake of heavy rain on three shops in Gaurikund on the Kedarnath Yatra route in Rudraprayag district in late night hours. The situation there is still not clear. However, rescue teams rushed to the site. It is learnt that the missing people were sleeping in the shops the cliff-collapse destroyed. According to the sector officer, Gourikund, several people got trapped under the debris. The SDRF team which has been carrying on the rescue operation along with NDRF team said that about 13 people have gone missing and they include both locals and Nepalese people. Fed by incessant, torrential rain, the river Mandakini is in high spate.
Though the NDRF and SDRF teams launched rescue operation in the immediate aftermath of the disaster heavy rain, coupled with falling debris, is hindering their works. Meanwhile, the regional meteorological centre warned of continued rain for the next few days and heavy downpour on August 6.
Speaking on the disaster, the SP Rudraprayag Visakha said that the district administration team, disaster management team and police team have been conducting rescue operation together with NDRF and SDRF teams. “They are trying to locate those trapped under the debris,” she added.
