156 nabbed for drunk driving in Dehradun

The police arrested 156 people for driving under the influence of alcohol in the last three days and seized all 156 vehicles in Dehradun district in the past three days. The police have started this drive to maintain road safety and public order, particularly during the weekend nights, the Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said. He stated that during the campaign, police teams conducted thorough checks on vehicles and drivers using breathalysers to identify those driving under the influence of alcohol. As a result, 156 individuals were arrested for drunk driving and their 156 vehicles were seized under Section 185 of the Motor Vehicles Act. Besides this, 40 more vehicles were impounded for offenses such as rash driving, overspeeding and other violations of traffic rules. A total of 125 drivers were fined, resulting in a collection of Rs 82,000 in compounding fees. Besides, 23 drivers were issued challans to appear before the court and 26 individuals wandering suspiciously at night were fined under the Police Act, contributing Rs 9,000 in compounding fees, as per SSP. He informed that the campaign also led to the detention of 136 individuals found loitering at night without any valid reason. These individuals were brought to police stations for verification procedures. Singh said that the police will continue to conduct such intensive checks to ensure public safety and adherence to traffic regulations to set a strong precedent for responsible behaviour on the roads.
