The 190th raising day of the 2/8 Gorkha Rifles was celebrated enthusiastically with the large participation of jawans, junior commissioned officers and former servicemen in Dehradun on Monday. Those who attended the commemorative programme said that raised on April 13, 1835 in Assam, it had a glorious legacy attached to it, adding that the name of the battalion had got changed from time to time and it had got its present name in 1907.
This battalion had fought the First World War as part of the Indian Core in France against Germany and displayed a high level of gallantry. It is also remembered for its glorious role in the Ladakh Operation in 1948-49.
