Cabinet minister Prem Chand Agrawal said that the State government is working for rural development and enhancing livelihood of villagers. The government is making development based policies for rural areas. He said this on Sunday at the conclusion of the first Rural Science Congress organised by Uttarakhand State Council for Science and Technology (UCOST) in association with Himalayan Environmental Studies and Conservation (HESCO) and Uttarakhand Council of Biotechnology (UCB).

HESCO founder Anil Joshi said that the village is the centre of GDP but the reasons for the villages lagging behind will have to be ascertained. At a time when the world is concerned about soil, air, jungles and water it must be kept in mind that villages are the source of air, jungles and water.

UCOST director general Durgesh Pant said that representatives from self help groups, non-governmental organisations, women cooperative committees and others from Uttarakhand and other border States had participated in the Rural Science Congress. The millet festival was the main attraction of the exhibition held as part of the event. Stalls were also set up by 10 best technical innovators from across India in addition to various stalls by Central and State departments. Stalls from Leh, Himachal Pradesh and other Himalayan States also attracted visitors during the event, he said. During the interactive sessions, discussions were held on various pertinent topics while major challenges for the entire Himalayan region were also deliberated upon.
