The Excise department in Bageshwar recovered 20 boxes of IMFL worth about Rs 1.2 lakh late on Wednesday night ahead of by-elections in the district. The authorities recovered the liquor boxes from Kalamath near Chaugaonchhina Road at around 9:30 PM on Wednesday night. The contraband was hidden with grass and leaves, said the officials. According to them, some officials got a tip-off about the liquor being reportedly smuggled into the area but when the authorities reached there, nobody was found near the boxes. It is possible that the smuggler came to know about the authorities’ arrival so they hid the boxes and escaped. They said that it is still unclear who were the smugglers and who were they sending these boxes but the police have started the investigation. The department is vigilant about liquor smuggling ahead of by-polls and will continue to conduct raids against illegal liquor supply in the district, added officials.
