An aged tiger died at the Dhela Rescue Centre in Corbett Tiger Reserve. The tiger was estimated to be about 20 years old and prima facie, the cause of death appears to be old age.
The tiger was rescued from the Dhikala range on November 15, 2019 and shifted to the Nainital Zoo. Later, on April 20, 2021, he was relocated to the Dhela Rescue Centre, where he had been under special care. With advancing age, the tiger began to suffer from various health issues. In 2025, the big cat successfully underwent surgery for a tumor which helped extend his life for some time. Forest officials and veterinary teams had been closely monitoring the tiger’s condition.
Following the tiger’s death, a post-mortem examination was conducted as per protocol. A panel comprising senior veterinary officers Dr Dushyant Sharma from Corbett Tiger Reserve and Dr Himanshu Pangti from the Nainital Zoo carried out the procedure at the Dhela Rescue Centre.
Corbett deputy director Rahul Mishra, along with other officials and staff, was present during the process. After completing all formalities, the carcass of the tiger, along with all the body parts, was disposed of on-site by cremation in accordance with the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).
