23 women get permits for CNG-fuelled auto rickshaws

The Transport department in Dehradun has issued permits for CNG-fuelled auto rickshaws to 23 women for the first time in Uttarakhand. These women have until March 30 to purchase their auto rickshaws after which they can begin operations upon completing all necessary documentation, the regional transport officer (Administration) of the Dehradun division Sunil Sharma said.

He stated that the department has been prioritising the issuance of new permits for clean-fuel public vehicles, not only to promote environmentally friendly transportation but also to encourage women’s participation in a traditionally male-dominated field. Out of the 250 CNG auto rickshaw permits issued in Dehradun, 75 were allocated to women. However, out of these, only 23 women will be driving their own auto rickshaws. “This may seem like a small number to some but it is a significant milestone. For the first time, so many women in Dehradun have shown interest in operating a public transport vehicle as a full time profession. These 23 women, mostly between the ages of 20 and 30, are determined to work in this sector and we will provide them with all possible support,” Sharma said.

He added that the department will assist these women in securing loans for purchasing their vehicles and provide guidance on operating within specific routes or affiliating with auto-rickshaw unions. Besides this, the department is considering sharing the details of these women drivers with educational institutions to ensure they can get some potential regular passengers. Many parents, particularly those with daughters, prefer reliable transportation for their children. Now, they will have the option to hire female drivers for pick-up and drop-off services, Sharma said. “Once these women complete all necessary formalities by March 30, we will initiate this process. We are committed to supporting them as much as possible. We also hope to see a similar response in other cities, such as Haridwar and Rishikesh and the department is working towards it,” he added.
