With search and rescue operations in Wayanad‘s Mundakkai continuing despite intermittent and often heavy rain, the additional inspector general of police, Kerala M R Ajith Kumar said that nearly 300 people were still missing in the rain-triggered devastating landslides that battered the region. While the unofficial estimates pegged the casualty figure at over 300 the official toll stands at 200 +.
Talking to the media, Kumar said that the final casualty figure would be ascertained after the revenue department completes collating the details. It might take a couple of days for things to become clear, he added. He further said that with the landslide-affected areas being divided into six zones, multiple teams are engaged in the round the clock search and rescue operations.
The Wayanad district administration said that 27 children and 76 women were among those dead.
