The Women Empowerment and Child Development (WECD) minister Rekha Arya informed that 320 girls will receive smartphones on the occasion of National Girl Child Day on January 24.
Stating this, Arya informed that the Girls Education Promotion Programme will be convened on the occasion of National Girl Child Day and digital education devices (smartphones) will be given to 320 meritorious girls for the years 2022 and 2023. The main objective of celebrating National Girl Child Day is to make girls aware of their rights as they are often considered inferior to boys in society. They are often denied opportunities to study and are forced into early marriages, leading to early responsibilities of motherhood, she said.
Arya further emphasised that girls have to fight for their rights and respect, and hence, efforts are made on this day to educate girls and make society aware of the issue. Every year, State governments organise various programmes in the States to celebrate National Girl Child Day. The Central government has also taken many important steps to improve the condition of girls at the social level, such as the ‘Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao’ campaign, ‘Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana,’ free or subsidised education and reservation of seats in colleges and universities, she said.
Further, Arya directed the officials to complete all the preparations for the National Girl Child Day celebration on January 24.
