Tuesday, 05 SEPTEMBER 2023 | PNS | BAGESHWAR

In latest Uttarakhand news, nearly 38 per cent of approximately 1, 12, 000 voters exercised their franchise till 1 pm in the Bageshwar assembly by-poll. The polling started at 7 am and will continue till 5 pm. The polling rate kept on picking up as the day progressed. Long queues of voters are being seen in the polling booths. Enthusiasm is particularly discernible among the youths and the elderly.  Even the women voters in large numbers are being seen thronging several polling booths. Notably, the by-poll was necessitated by the death of the incumbent MLA and cabinet minister Chandan Ram Dass. In all, five candidates are in the by-poll fray though the contest is mainly between the BJP candidate and the deceased’s wife Parvati Dass and the Congress candidate Basant Kumar who switched to Congress from Aam Aadmi Party a few days before the nomination filing process started.

According to the political watchers, the result of this bypoll is important as it is being touted as a report card of the Pushkar Singh Dhami government, which has just completed its two years in the saddle, ahead of the 2024 general election.

Notably, the votes will be counted on September 8.
