421 rape cases registered in U’khand in 2023, Udham Singh Nagar tops districts

Amid the protest against crimes against women, information received in response to an application under the Right To Information Act has revealed that a total of 421 alleged rape cases were registered across Uttarakhand in 2023, with Udham Singh Nagar district having the highest number at 204 cases. This information was disclosed by the Uttarakhand police headquarters in response to an RTI application filed by an RTI activist and advocate from Kashipur, Nadim Uddin. According to the data, the activist said that a total of 421 alleged rape cases were registered in Uttarakhand in 2023. Udham Singh Nagar recorded the highest number with 204 cases, followed by Dehradun with 85 cases, Haridwar with 50 cases and Nainital with 26 cases. Besides this, Pithoragarh reported eight cases, Almora three cases, Bageshwar five, Chamoli and Uttarkashi two each, Champawat four, Pauri 13 and Tehri 19 cases. Rudraprayag was the only district where no alleged rape case was reported, as per the police’s data. The report also revealed that 48 alleged dowry deaths occurred in Uttarakhand in 2023 with the highest number in Haridwar at 16 cases, followed by Udham Singh Nagar with 12, six in Nainital and three in Dehradun. Pithoragarh, Rudraprayag and Uttarkashi reported two dowry deaths each while Almora, Bageshwar, Chamoli, Champawat and Pauri had one each. Tehri was the only district with no alleged dowry deaths reported. Nadim Uddin said that a total of 624 cases of assault on women were registered in 2023, with the highest number in Dehradun with 156 cases, followed by Haridwar with 146, Udham Singh Nagar with 128 and Nainital with 104. Besides this, Almora had 15 cases while there were four cases in Bageshwar, seven in Chamoli, three in Champawat, 14 in Pauri, 22 in Pithoragarh, two in Rudraprayag, eight in Tehri eight and five cases in Uttarkashi. In terms of offenses related to insulting the modesty of women, 26 cases were registered last year with Dehradun reporting the highest number at 11, followed by Haridwar with eight cases and Almora and Pithoragarh with three each. There was one case in Chamoli district while there were no cases in the eight remaining districts. Moreover, there was one acid attack case reported in Haridwar last year. A total of 1,016 cases of alleged dowry harassment were registered across the State with Dehradun leading with 382 cases followed by Udham Singh Nagar with 249 cases, Haridwar with 203 and Nainital with 110. Tehri and Pauri each had 15 cases while Pithoragarh, Almora and Champawat had 13, 11 and nine cases respectively. Bageshwar and Uttarkashi reported three and four cases respectively and Chamoli and Rudraprayag reported one each, said the RTI activist. Besides this, 698 cases of alleged kidnapping of women were reported across 12 districts with Tehri being the only district with no kidnapping cases. Haridwar reported the highest number of kidnapping cases at 183, followed by 178 in both Dehradun and Udham Singh Nagar, 44 in Nainital and 27 in Almora. Besides this, Pauri, Pithoragarh, Chamoli and Champawat had 22, 20, 15 and 12 kidnapping cases respectively. Uttarkashi reported nine cases, Rudraprayag eight cases and Bageshwar one. One kidnapping case was also reported by the railway police. Uddin said that these statistics underscore the ongoing challenge of crimes against women in the State and the need for consistent efforts to address these issues.
