48th anniversary of Chipko movement celebrated in Raini
Women who worked with Gaura Devi in the movement felicitated on the occasion

The 48th anniversary of the world famous Chipko Movement was observed in the village of its origin- Raini in Chamoli district on Saturday. A programme was organised by the Niti Mana Gaura Devi Pariyavaran Sanrakshan Evam Samajik Vikas Samiti on the occasion. The women who had played an active role in the movement along with its leader Gaura Devi were felicitated by the chief guest, Guru Ram Rai university vice chancellor US Rawat.
Earlier a statue of Gaurav Devi was unveiled in the village. Women from various parts of this border region performed folk dances like Jhumelo and Chanchdi along with a programme based on the environment. Bali Devi, Doka Devi, Ukha Devi, Kalli Devi, Juthi Devi, Manguli Devi and Jethuli Devi who had actively participated in the movement along with Gaura Devi were felicitated on the occasion.
