50 labourers feared trapped as avalanche strikes Mana

In a big disaster befalling Uttarakhand, at least 50 labourers-engaged in road clearing works- are feared to have been trapped after an avalanche struck Mana village near Badrinath Dham in Chamoli district. ITBP and BRO rescue personnel rushed to the spot upon receiving the information of the avalanche.  Ten of the construction workers are learnt to have been pulled out while search for others is on.

The chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed his deep sorrow and anguish over the calamity and said that all-out efforts were being made to pull out the trapped workers safe and sound.

Meanwhile, Chamoli district magistrate Sandeep Tiwari said that the adverse weather with non-stop rain and snowfall is hindering heli service operation in the affected area. “Besides, we are facing difficulty in contacting the rescue teams as satellite phones are not working there,” he said, adding that they were yet to receive any conformation of casualty. He further said that as the higher authorities are fully cooperating with the district administration they hope to reach the spot soon to plunge into the rescue operation.    

Further, acting on the CM’s directive, the DM has released mobile numbers- 8218867005, 9058441404, telephone numbers- 0 0135 2664315 and toll free number 0 1070 for any information about the calamity.
