In an effort to enhance road safety, the Transport department recently launched a major enforcement campaign in Dehradun. A total of 54 vehicles including 12 buses were found violating regulations and action was taken against them.
According to officials, under the directions of the regional transport officer (Enforcement and Road Safety) Dehradun division, Anita Chamola, a special joint enforcement campaign was initiated recently along the Asharodi route, from ISBT to Lachhiwala on the Saharanpur route. The campaign aimed to ensure compliance with road safety and transport rules within the district. Under this campaign, the assistant regional transport officer (ARTO) for Enforcement in Vikasnagar conducted thorough checks to verify adherence to permit conditions and vehicle safety standards among buses operating under the all India tourist permit from other States, they added.
The officials said that during the inspection, it was found that a total of 54 vehicles, including 12 buses, violated various provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act. As per regulations, challan actions were taken against these vehicles and 12 vehicles, among them four buses, were seized due to serious irregularities.
Further, some buses had deficiencies related to safety standards and fitness. Action has been recommended against the fitness certificates of two of these buses.
Chamola emphasised that neglecting safety standards in passenger buses directly jeopardises public safety and any form of negligence in such cases will not be tolerated. The objective of the Transport department is not only to penalise rule violators but also to raise awareness about road safety among drivers and the general public. Specifically, in passenger vehicles, it is mandatory to comply with safety equipment requirements, ensure fitness, maintain valid permits and confirm driver eligibility to reduce the likelihood of accidents. She also said that special campaigns will continue in the future with strict measures against those who disregard the rules. The Transport department has urged vehicle operators to keep all their vehicle documents up-to-date and to ensure safe transportation by adhering to road safety standards.
