55.44 % voter turnout recorded in Bageshwar Assembly by-election

Polling in the Bageshwar Assembly by-election concluded peacefully on Tuesday with 55.44 per cent voter turnout being recorded in the constituency. The electoral fates of five candidates including the BJP and Congress candidates will now be known on September 8 when the votes will be counted and the results will be declared. According to the authorities, polling went off peacefully in 188 polling booths in the constituency. The voter turnout was comparatively less during the morning but picked up pace as the day progressed.
According to official data there are a total of 1,18,264 voters in the constituency out of which 65,570 voters cast their votes. Out of the voters who exercised their franchise, women were more enthusiastic with 63.88 per cent women voters polling compared to 47.27 male voters. The district election officer Anuradha Pal informed that the voter turnout in the by-election was 55.44 per cent. Officials informed that 1,673 postal ballots had also been received and that these were yet to be added to the total voting percentage.
It should be mentioned here that the direct contest in this by-election is between the BJP candidate Parvati Dass who is also the widow of the late MLA Chandan Ram Dass, and the Congress candidate Basant Kumar. Arjun Dev of Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, Bhagwat Kohli of Uttarakhand Parivartan Party and Bhagwati Prasad Trikoti of the Samajwadi Party are also contesting the by-election.
