56 years after aircraft crash, mortal remains of a sepoy to reach native village today

After a long wait of 56 years, the body of Sepoy Narayan Singh, who had gone missing in a 1968 aircraft crash at the snow-covered mountains of Rohtang in Himachal Pradesh, will arrive at his home at Kolpudi village in Tharali of Chamoli district on Thursday. His mortal remains were airlifted from Himachal Pradesh by an Indian Army aircraft to Gauchar, Chamoli on Wednesday.
Singh had gone missing 56 years ago in the crash of an Air Force AN-12 plane. The plane got stuck amidst bad weather and crashed above Rohtang Pass in Himachal Pradesh. After all these years, the remains of the bodies of four Indian soldiers who perished in the crash, including Singh, were found at Rohtang Pass. A joint team of Dogra Scouts of the Indian Army and Tricolour Mountain Rescue recovered these remains.
The pradhan of Kolpudi village and Singh’s nephew Jaiveer Singh said that the mortal remains of the sepoy would arrive at his native village under Tharali tehsil of Chamoli district on Thursday. “The Army officials informed us on Monday that Singh had been identified with the help of a paper found in his pocket. Besides, his name was written on the nameplate of his uniform. His mortal remains will be cremated in accordance with the Hindu rituals a little after these arrive here on Thursday,” he added.
