7 dead, 19 injured in two mishaps within 24 hours

Seven died and 19 were injured in two separate road accidents in the State within 24 hours.

A bus carrying 22 passengers fell into a gorge in Pauri in which six people died and 16 sustained serious injuries on Sunday. The second mishap occured in Nainital district. The Pauri senior superintendent of police Lokeshwar Singh informed that five individuals were found dead on the spot while one died during the treatment. Besides this, nine persons were referred to higher centre in Srinagar while the remaining injured persons were admitted to the Pauri district hospital. He informed that a bus carrying 28 passengers veered off the road and plunged approximately 100 metres into a gorge near Dehalchauri in the Srinagar area of Pauri district at about 4 PM on Sunday. The local police reached the accident spot and the Pauri district control room also alerted the Uttarakhand State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) about the accident after which rescue teams from the Srinagar and Satpuli posts were dispatched to the site. The bus of Garhwal Motor Owners Union Limited, bearing registration number UK 12PB-0177, was traveling from Pauri to Dehalchauri, Srinagar when the driver reportedly lost control due to which the bus fell into the steep gorge. Local authorities, including SDRF, Pauri police and residents, launched an immediate rescue operation. They managed to extricate 18 injured passengers from the wreckage and rushed them to the hospital for treatment. Four bodies were retrieved and later sent for legal procedures. One person reportedly died during the treatment. The deceased have been identified as Sunita (25), Pramila, Priyanshu (17), Nagendra and Sulochana and all were locals. The SSP stated that the SDRF teams also conducted a thorough search of the surrounding area to ensure no other passengers were trapped or missing. After an extensive operation, no additional victims were found. The police are investigating the matter, Singh said.

Meanwhile, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed grief at the deaths in the mishap while adding that the local administration had facilitated necessary treatment of the injured.
