Neighbourhood woman had stolen the child to sell to a childless couple

The police have recovered the eight month old baby who was abducted from his home in Jwalapur area on Saturday. The police recovered the child safely from two women from the Saptrishi area and arrested a total of seven accused in the case, informed Garhwal deputy inspector general Karan Singh Nagnyal and Haridwar senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said in a Press conference.

The SSP said that Haridwar resident Sanjay Sharma had no children of his own, due to which he asked his relatives Ruby and Asha to get a child for which a sum of Rs 2.5 lakh was to be paid. The women told this to Kiran who then planned to abduct the baby of Ravindra, who lived in her neighbourhood. According to the police, on Saturday when Kiran saw that Ravindra was not at home while his wife was on the terrace, she entered Ravindra’s house, abducted the child and brought him to her house. Kiran had already called a relative named Sushma and made her sit at her house.  Sushma reached Jatwara bridge with the baby where Kiran’s relative Anita was already present.  Kiran and Anita called Ruby and Asha and told them to call Sharma. The police said that Sharma met the accused Anita and Ruby at a petrol pump and gave them Rs 50,000 in cash, adding that he would pay the remainder later.Sharma then went with the child to a guest house in Haripur area. Later, when he learnt about the baby having been abducted he called Ruby and Asha and returned the child.

According to the police, when they reached Ravindra’s home on Saturday the dog squad was also called. The police dog sniffed the baby’s clothes and also entered a house in the neighbourhood. This strengthened the suspicion of the police who intensified their efforts to trace the abducted child. Footage from scores of CCTV cameras was scanned and informers were activated. The police finally managed to recover the child safely and have arrested seven accused in the case including Sharma and his wife. DIG Nagnyal has announced Rs 30,000 reward for the police team responsible for solving the case. It is pertinent to mention here that considering the seriousness of the case, chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami had phoned the Haridwar SSP on Saturday and had directed him to work for the swift recovery of the child.
