PIONEER NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

Police took action against operators of eight paying guest (PG) accommodation and hostels in the Premnagar area for not verifying their tenants and fined them Rs 80,000 under the Police Act on Tuesday. The action came after a clash between two college groups, in which a student died on Monday night.

About 75 students who could not show proper identity documents or were living without verification were taken to the police station for questioning, police said. Traffic checking was also carried out and 52 drivers were fined for violating rules, while 16 vehicles were seized. Police also checked hotels, dhabas and restaurants while also instructing owners to follow closing time rules and not allow alcohol consumption on their premises.

The police have warned all hostel and PG operators to ensure complete verification of their occupants, install CCTV cameras and not allow entry after 10 PM. Police warned that strict action will be taken against both students and owners if anyone is found involved in drugs or criminal activities.
