83-year-old found dead on roadside in Tanakpur, police suspect murder

An 83-year-old woman’s body was found on Tuesday morning about 500 metres away from her house near a highway in Tanakpur of Champawat district. The gold ornaments of the deceased were missing and there were also marks on the ears, leading the police to suspect that the woman was murdered to rob her of her jewellery, officials said.
According to them, a man named Parmanand who worked as a gardener in the neighbourhood of the victim Bhagirathi Devi found her body about 500 metres away from the house and two kilometres away from Vichai village located near Tanakpur. The officials said that the gardener immediately informed the neighbours about this and soon, all villagers and nearby relatives of the deceased gathered at the spot. The locals informed the police after which circle officer Avinash Verma along with the police team reached the spot to investigate the case.
The police also called the dog squad to the site to gather more evidence in the case. The officials said that the body was found in a suspicious condition and also had marks on the ear that suggested foul play. The victim used to live alone in Tanakpur and her son along with his family live in Dehradun. Her son Mohan Chand has also told the police that his mother used to wear nearly four tolas of gold jewellery on her neck, ears and nose which were missing from her body. The officials said that prima facie, it appears to be a murder case and the police are presently considering this angle to start the investigation. They said that the police are waiting for the post-mortem report and will take further action accordingly. The culprit will be behind the bars soon, added the officials.
