850 CCTV cameras installed to manage traffic on Char Dham routes

The Uttarakhand police will manage traffic and other associated issues during the Char Dham Yatra with the help of eight drones and about 850 CCTV cameras installed on the Char Dham routes. The police have also marked about 130 parking spots in seven districts of the Garhwal region for the Char Dham Yatra that have a parking capacity of over 55,000 vehicles including about 17,000 four-wheeler vehicles and 38,000 two-wheeler vehicles. The police have also identified 54 blackspots on the routes prone to accidents, the deputy inspector general (Crime, Law and Order) and nodal officer of Traffic for Char Dham Yatra, P Renuka Devi said. She informed that the police have identified seven parking spots near Char Dham routes in Pauri with the capacity to hold about 1,200 vehicles. Uttarkashi and Dehradun have 13 and 16 parking spaces with a parking capacity of about 2,200 and 1,600 vehicles respectively. Rudraprayag and Chamoli will have 15 and 34 parking spaces that can accommodate about 2,400 and 3,200 vehicles respectively. Besides this, Tehri has 20 parking spaces with 13,300 capacity. Haridwar with 25 parking spaces will accommodate about 42,000 vehicles. The pilgrims have to face severe parking issues while going to Kedarnath considering which, a parking space has been prepared in Sonprayag that can hold about 3,000 vehicles. The DIG said that the police have also identified about 70 traffic bottlenecks on Char Dham routes where traffic gets affected the most. This includes 16 bottlenecks on the Char Dham route in Rudraprayag, eight each in Rishikesh and Chamoli, over 15 bottlenecks in Srinagar and Lakshmanjhula, six each in Uttarkashi and Tehri and about 10 in Haridwar. The authorities face traffic congestion the most in Rishikesh, Srinagar and near Kedarnath during Char Dham Yatra every year. Additional police personnel will be deployed in these bottlenecks to ensure smooth traffic. She informed that all Char Dham routes have been divided into sectors and an official has been assigned to each sector who will be responsible for tackling all road and traffic-related issues. She said that over 830 police personnel will be deployed this year solely for traffic management on Char Dham routes. The police will also keep an eye on Char Dham routes with the help of about 850 CCTVs. Over 50 per cent of these CCTVs will be directly connected to police control rooms, she added.
