90 % tunnel construction work of Rishikesh- Karnprayag rail project complete: Vaishnaw

 The Union Railways minister Ashwini Vaisnaw informed the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday that work on the tunnels of the ambitious Rishikesh- Karnprayag rail project is 90 per cent complete. In response to a question by Rajya Sabha MP Mahendra Bhatt, the Union minister said that the total length of the rail line of the project is 125 km which passes through the tough and challenging geological terrain of Himalayas.

He said that the objective of the project is to change the connectivity in Uttarakhand. The alignment of the Rishikesh- Karnprayag rail line passes through Dehradun, Tehri, Pauri, Rudraprayag and Chamoli districts of Uttarakhand.

The project will provide rail connectivity to Devprayag and Karnprayag from Rishikesh and national capital.

The minister further informed that a major part of the project passes through tunnels. There are 16 main line tunnels with a total length of 105 km and 94 km long 12 safety tunnels. He said that construction of nine main tunnels with a total length of 94 km is complete. Similarly construction of eight rescue tunnels is also complete, the minister informed.
