Ninety nine years old ascetic Barkha Giri passed away recently in his Ashram hut at Kalishila in Rudraprayag district. He was given a final farewell by his devotees in the Ashram.
According to belief, goddess Kali had appeared as a 12-year-old girl at Kalishila. Reached after an eight kilometre steep climb from Kalimath, one reaches Kalishila where footprints of the goddess can be seen on a rock. Barkha Giri had arrived here about 50 years ago for worshiping goddess Mahakali and remained here since then worshipping the goddess while living in a hut amidst dense forests.
Many serious seekers became his disciples like Saraswati Giri of German origin. Narsinghpithadhishwar Rasik Maharaj expressed sorrow at the demise of Barkha Giri. He recalled that the ascetic had practiced penance in the worship of the goddess and lived in simplicity throughout his life.
