Police nab two robbers after encounter injuring one accused

Two seasoned criminals were nabbed by the police after an encounter on Wednesday night. The duo is accused of shooting two police constables in the Laksar area of Haridwar district on October 16. The Haridwar senior superintendent of police Yogendra Singh Rawat said that the two accused had come to Laksar to carry out a robbery when they were encountered by the police and later arrested.

Addressing the media here on Thursday, Rawat said that a miscreant was shot in the leg in the encounter and was admitted to the hospital.  The other miscreant is in the custody of the police. He was produced in the court and sent to jail. The two accused have been identified as Shakeel and Naeem who are brothers and residents of Meerut. The SSP said that there are already 15 cases registered against Shakeel and 23 cases against Naeem for crimes including robbery in Baghpat, Meerut, Ghaziabad and Saharanpur. Both of them had come to Laksar with their gang on October 16, but even then due to the promptness of the police, they could not carry out the crime they had planned. They had managed to escape after shooting the policemen chasing them.

The SSP informed that earlier on October 5, the same gang had tried to rob Laksar businessman Sunil Bansal, but due to the alertness of the woman at home the criminals could not succeed in their plans.  During this attempt, the picture of a criminal was captured on CCTV camera.  Sunil Bansal had filed a case against unknown persons in Laksar Kotwali on October 6.  Since then the police were investigating the matter.

According to the SSP, on October 19 also, two members of the same gang had come to Laksar to carry out a major incident, but the police surrounded them near Kunwakhed village. Following this, the criminals fired at the police to save themselves.The police also fired in retaliation. One of the criminals was shot in the leg during the encounter after which the duo was arrested by the police. The police are searching for three identified and two to three unidentified members of the gang.
