The wife of a police constable was murdered in their home here in broad daylight on Thursday. Though the articles in the home were scattered and jewellery was removed from the locker, nothing valuable was stolen, leading the police to suspect that murder was the intention of the break-in.
Shankar Singh Bisht is posted as a constable in the Bankheda police station in Bazpur. He lives with his wife Mamta Bisht (35) and their two children live in the Kalika colony in Haldwani. On Thursday, he left for work while his children went to school and his wife was at home alone. On returning home, the two children found the items scattered inside the home and blood stains on the wall and floor. They phoned their father who in turn informed his sister who lives nearby. When his sister entered the home to check she found the woman’s body lying in a corner of the kitchen with an injury on her head.
It is being suspected that there was a struggle between her and the intruders during which her head may have hit the wall. Various questions remain unanswered as the intruders first tried a master-key to open the locker without success and then used a hammer to break it open but even after that did not steal the jewellery inside. The Nainital senior superintendent of police Pankaj Bhatt who also inspected the scene of crime said that it is suspected that the intention of the break-in was murder as nothing valuable was stolen from the home. He said that the police have found some important clues and added that the culprits will not be spared.
Earlier, the forensics team and dog squad also reached the scene to collect evidence along with police officers even as news of a police constable’s wife being murdered in their home caused a stir in the locality. The police questioned more than a dozen persons after the murder though nothing major was ascertained from them. According to sources, labourers working at a home being constructed near the Bisht residence were missing since Thursday afternoon. The police are searching for them though they had not been found till the time of this report being filed.
