Indian traders block Indo-Nepal bridge for two hours, relent after assurance of action against miscreants
Tension prevailed across the Indo-Nepal border a day after some Nepalese citizens pelted stones at workers building a flood protection wall on the banks of the Kali river on the Indian side on Sunday in Dharchula area of Pithoragarh district. The traders of Dharchula prevented the opening of the suspension bridge across the Kali river for a couple of hours on Monday morning and relented after the authorities assured that action will be taken against the Nepalese responsible for the stone pelting.
The Kali river divides Indian and Nepalese territory in this region of Kumaon. While the Nepalese authorities have already built a flood protection wall on their side of the bank, the Indian authorities building the same on Monday faced disruption from some elements from the Nepalese side as some stone pelters injured one of the workers involved in the work. The Nepalese authorities reportedly resorted to lathi charge to disperse the disruptive elements. Traders from Dharchula under the leadership of Dharchula Vyapar Mandal president Bhupendra Thapa reached the suspension bridge at 7 AM on Monday and prevented the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) personnel from opening the bridge gate for nearly two hours. On being informed, the sub divisional magistrate Divesh Shashani reached the bridge and talked to the protesting traders.
The protesting traders were demanding that the Nepalese authorities take action against the stone pelters. The Nepalese authorities assured that action will be taken against the culprits within three days. The protesting traders allowed the opening of the bridge after the assurance.
