Kumaon commissioner Deepak Rawat has directed all district magistrates of Kumaon division to impose penalties on those dumping garbage in forest areas including tourists, locals and commercial establishments. He issued this and various other instructions in a review meeting of district magistrates and additional district magistrates of district administrations along with forest officials of the Kumaon division on Friday.

Rawat said in the meeting that many people litter in forest areas including local people and tourists. He said that some commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants also allegedly dispose of garbage in forest areas, especially in those located near tourist spots. The respective DMs and forest officials should take appropriate actions to prevent such practices and impose hefty penalties on those dumping garbage in forest areas, said the Kumaon commissioner. He also stated that respective departments of some districts have not been removing the name of people from the records of Khatauni after their death and updating it regularly. Such situations are more prevalent in plain areas of the division than in mountainous areas.

The DMs should ensure officials concerned to improve the situation in their respective areas, said Rawat. Rawat also expressed his concern over cases of disputes pending for a long time in district courts and instructed the officials to settle them as soon as possible. He also directed food inspectors of the division to ensure regular inspections of hotels, restaurants and shops to prevent the consumption of adulterated food by citizens that can pose potential health risks.
