Noted cultural expert and educationalist Data Ram Purohit was presented the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for 2021 by President Droupadi Murmu. The award was present to him in the national Capital on Thursday. Resident of Srinagar in Pauri district, Purohit received the award for his commendable contribution to the promotion of Uttarakhand’s folk arts.
Purohit has dedicated his life to promotion of Uttarakhand’s folk arts and artistes. Based on his research on the State’s folk arts, he has delivered lectures in universities across the world including Heidelberg University in Germany and Princeton University in USA. He has played an important role in academically publicising the folk system of Dhol, Pandwani, Bhadvarta, Jagar, Ramman, songs of Nanda and other aspects based on his research works. He is also credited with conceptualising and formation of the folk arts and culture centre in HNB Garhwal Central University. He has also played an active role in research works, writing, direction and guiding artistes at the local and international level.
