Dehradun police on Sunday arrested two habitual cycle thieves Saurabh Arora and Raja, both aged 24, along with 19 cycles stolen from different areas of the district. The police said that both accused are drug addicts and steal expensive cycles to get money to buy drugs. The police informed that a complainant from the Vasant Vihar area registered a complaint on Friday that his cycle has been stolen by unknown thieves from his house.
Taking cognisance of the matter, the station house officer of the Vasant Vihar police station constituted two separate teams to conduct the investigation. The first team started the investigation by analysing footage from 63 CCTV cameras installed in the vicinity of the complainant’s house. The second team activated the informers’ system and checked the current status of some offenders who had been accused of such crimes in the past, as per the police. On the basis of the evidence gathered by the police teams, the police arrested Saurabh Arora and Raja on Saturday, both aged 24 and also recovered 19 cycles worth nearly Rs three lakh from a dilapidated building.
According to the police, both accused lived in the Patelnagar area but stole cycles from across the city. They revealed during the preliminary inquiry that they are drug addicts and steal expensive cycles to get money to buy drugs and spend on their friends to show off, said the police. They both allegedly used to steal cycles and hide them in a dilapidated building and used to sell them later as per their need, said the police. Both will be presented in court soon, as per the police.
