The rise in preference for government jobs has become a prominent feature in Uttarakhand. More than one lakh youth had appeared for 563 posts in the Patwari-Lekhpal examination held earlier in February. Those seeking government jobs are also a priority for the State government which has taken various measures to stop malpractices in the recruitment examinations and also brought a strict anti-copying law in the State. However, thera are mixed opinions about this preference for government jobs. Dehradun resident Ramesh Malhotra opined, “Many youth have a mindset which is dependent on their parents’ opinions and the parents of this generation are more focused on government jobs. The parents preferring government jobs is a major influence on the youth,” he said.
Vipul Sharma who graduated recently said, “Government jobs are very much in demand. Moreover, government jobs provide much needed security compared to private jobs. Apart from this, the salary of government employees is comparatively better than those in private jobs.”
Private company employee Ashish Jena said, “Working hours can also be a reason why many youth are preferring government jobs over private ones. The government employees benefit from better working hours. Importantly, their jobs are secure and there is rarely any tension of losing the job,” he opined.
