Sunday, 02 April 2023 | PNS | DEHRADUN

The director general of police Ashok Kumar has directed that strict action should be taken under the Motor Vehicles Act against vehicles found changing lanes carelessly on highways and in cases of heavy vehicles found driven on the wrong side of the road. An awareness campaign on lane driving and the lane for heavy vehicles should be undertaken on social media, he said. The DGP issued these directions while chairing a meeting to address traffic challenges following construction of new highways in the four large districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Udham Singh Nagar and Nainital. He said that following construction of new highways in these districts, there has been change in traffic duties and new challenges have emerged. These challenges have to be resolved through communication with the public and new initiatives. He issued various directions to put a check on road traffic accidents and traffic management to the officers in the meeting.

In addition to implementing lane driving, the DGP said that the towing-crane service implemented in public private partnership mode in Dehradun district for action against vehicles parked in no-parking zones should be introduced in other districts also. Considering the Char Dham Yatra 2023, an adequate number of Prantiya Rakshak Dal personnel should be sought and after providing them traffic management training, they should be deployed on traffic duty. He further directed that two CPU Hawk mobiles each should be deployed permanently in Mussoorie and Nainital.  Further, in addition to put a check on overspeeding incidents on the highways, the superintendent of police (Traffic) should establish coordination with the RTO to fix the speed. Amended notification should be issued and sign boards should be installed on the highways, he said. Kumar stressed that there should not be any encroachment on the highways and the smooth movement of the public should be ensured. For the Char Dham Yatra vehicles returning from the shrines, the Garudchatti to Chilla via the barrage route should be used and a one-way system should be implemented on the stretch of the route from Garudchatti to the barrage. AI technology should also be put to use in the traffic plan considering the Char Dham Yatra, said the DGP.
