With the mercury rising across Uttarakhand for the past one week, the demand for electricity keeps rising fast. It is learnt that the demand for electricity has risen by five million units in a week. This results in the supply system failing to meet the rising demand. Consequently, power outages are happening. Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited is trying to meet the rising demand by purchasing power from the market. It is learnt from the UPCL that for the first time in Uttarakhand, the daily power demand has crossed 43 million units. The reason is being ascribed to the rise in the use of fans, coolers and ACs.
Besides, the production of electricity from the hydel power projects is not satisfactory. The power officials said that despite additional electricity being supplied by the Centre, the situation is not improving enough. Whereas the demand was in the neighbourhood of 38 million units a week ago, it has now risen up to over 43 million units. It is being apprehended that in the coming days, the demand may spiral up to 45 million units. It may further rise up to 50 million units in May.
