Working out in the gym sans precaution detrimental to health, say experts
PNS/Dehradun
While an increasing number of males and females are hitting the gymnasium either for a muscular physique or an attractive figure, experts point out that exercising improperly or strenuously without correct guidance can be detrimental to health.
Noted orthopaedic surgeon Dr BKS Sanjay said, “Nowadays 10 per cent of the total patients visiting doctors daily are gym goers. People, especially youngsters, waste their money in trying to get fit by working out in the gym while also inviting serious health issues. Back injury and strain on the shoulder are the most common injuries people face while exercising in the gym.Exercising beyond one’s limit weakens the outer layer of the body. Apart from this, hitting the gym can even cause heart attacks in some individuals.”
He further said that going to the gym is not at all necessary for maintaining good health and to stay fit. “Going for daily morning walks and doing jobs which entail physical activity are better options. Use the stairs instead of using lifts for good health and physique. Even youngsters must indulge in the household activities rather than wasting money in going to a gym,” he added.
Commenting on the subject gym instructor Satyam said, “The advantage and disadvantage of going to the gymnasium depends considerably on the instructor. If done properly, exercises in the gym make one fit and help one overcome even some long term injuries. However we advise those with earlier injuries to not exercise beyond their limit. Those who cannot afford to work out in a gymnasium should go for regular morning walks and work out at home with exercises like push ups,” he said.
