Potato output in Bageshawar expected to be high this year

Bageshawar district in Uttarakhand state is a high productive area for potato production. It is produced in 278 hectare area. Potatoes from 4000 to 4250 metric tons are being produced in this district. The yield is high in areas of the district close to the Himalayas like Sama, Leti, Bari Panyali, Gyandhura and Khati along with Garur and Kanda and the growers earn well from potato cultivation. This time, the potato production is expected to be high in Bageshawar.
The potatoes produced in the areas of the district close to the Himalayas are known to be tasty. The potato farmers adopt the organic methods in the production. The demand of the potatoes grown in this district is high in the market and the potato traders come to this district from Haldwani to buy them. The potatoes are sold for Rs 20 per kg. The farmers even get Rs 30 per kg in the retail market.
The time of planting seeds is January in the valley areas of the district. The time of its planting in the high altitude areas is February. By June-end, the potatoes are ready to harvest. The agriculture scientist from Agriculture Science Centre Bageshawar Kamal Kumar Pandey said that the recent rain is favourable for potato production, adding that the potato yield is expected to be high this year. The district horticulture officer R K Singh also said that the volume of potato being produced in the district keeps increasing.
