The Uttarakhand High Court has directed the State government and Peyjal Nigam to clarify the current status of the international sports stadium in Haldwani. The bench of chief justice Vipin Sanghi and justice Rakesh Thapliyal issued this direction while hearing on a public interest litigation regarding the sports stadium work not being completed on time. The court has also asked the government which sports were held in the stadium during the past one year, how many persons were trained and how many trainers are employed. The court has sought these details in four weeks.
Haldwani resident Amit Kholia has stated in his PIL that the Indira Gandhi international sports stadium has been built for Rs 200 crore on 15.20 hectare area in Haldwani but work on the stadium is incomplete. After repeatedly changing the executing agency, the government has not given the contract for the work to the Peyjal Nigam. The 38th national games were to be held here but due to incomplete work the Centre is looking for another venue. The petitioner has stated that the construction work in the stadium has not been completed past the deadline.
