The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) president Karan Mahara has termed the decision of Narendra Modi government to demonetise the Rs 2,000 currency note as senseless. Interacting with the media persons at the State headquarters of the Congress party on Saturday, he said that the frustration of defeat in the assembly elections of Karnataka is clearly visible in the decision of Modi government.
He said that no decrease in the terrorist activity was witnessed after demonetisation -I as claimed by the Modi government then. Mahara added that the claim that demonetisation is a strike on the black economy also fell flat on its face when the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in its report informed that more than 99 per cent of the currency in circulation before the demonetisation came back to the banks. He said that the demonetisation of Rs 2,000 note is surprising since a lot of money was spent on its printing and making changes in the dispensation system of the ATMs in the country.
The PCC president said that common people bore the brunt of the demonetisation- I as people had to stand in long queues to exchange the currency. Criticising the decision of the government, he said that the per day limit (Rs 20,000) of exchanging currency of Rs 2,000 denomination is absurd and taxing on the people of the country.
