Congress should shun politics on rail tragedy: BJP

The Bharatiya Janata Party has stated that the Congress should shun politics on the Balasore train tragedy in Odisha. Responding to calls for the Railway minister’s resignation made by the State’s Congress leaders, the BJP State president Mahendra Bhatt said that during the term of the UPA government at the Centre, there were 1,034 rail mishaps resulting in 1,159 deaths when Lalu Prasad Yadav was the Railway minister. However, his morals did not awaken and instead he was busy in providing jobs in Railways in exchange for land, said Bhatt. Similarly, there were many rail mishaps when Nitish Kumar and Mamata Banerjee were the Railway ministers.

Considering this, the Congress should first recall the unfortunate mishaps during its own term in office before playing politics and seeking resignation of any minister. “This was a time for relief and rescue works on a war footing and providing succor to the affected families while providing all possible assistance. However, the opposition is trying to gain political points by indulging in allegations and counter-allegations. This was the first time in the nation when a Prime Minister went to inspect the site of the mishap and reached the hospitals to empathise with the injured. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had clarified on the first day that the guilty will not be spared. This is why an investigation by the Central Bureau of Investigation has been recommended into a rail mishap for the first time in the country,” said Bhatt.
