Police arrest two for alleged conversion attempt in Kichha

The Udham Singh Nagar police arrested two men who were allegedly trying to entice local people of the Kichha area of the district to adopt Christianity. Both men had allegedly arrived in the Kiccha area to organise education camps to lure people, especially people belonging to deprived sections of society, into getting converted to Christianity, said Dhirendra Kumar, the station house officer of Kichha police station. He said that the police have registered a case against them under the Uttarakhand Freedom of Religion (Amendment) Act.
He told The Pioneer that the accused have been identified as Ankit and Vikas who are natives of the Bareilly district of Uttar Pradesh but were living in Dehradun and West Bengal respectively. He said that they had specially arrived in the district to allegedly lure people into getting converted. He said, “The police received a complaint on Saturday that two men have organised an education camp where they are allegedly promising people that they would provide their children free quality education in good schools and will provide them monetary assistance and other benefits if they adopt Christianity. We reached the location and arrested both the accused.” He said that police are keeping an eye on such cases in their respective areas as per the directions of the district’s senior superintendent of police Manjunath TC and will take strict action against them in the matter as per the law.
